Federation of Students’ Council decision on the Canadian Asian Student Associations’ appeal

Waterloo, On - July 12, 2010

Late Sunday afternoon the Federation of Students' Council voted to uphold the decision of the Internal Administration Committee (IAC) to disband the Canadian Asian Student Association.

The Canadian Asian Student Association (CASA) was disbanded on Friday, June 25 2010 by the IAC after being on probation since November 2009. The initial probation was due to holding a non-sanctioned event off campus after being warned against the risks associated with the event, and the consequences of having their club go on probation. The probation stipulated that the club could not run off campus events that included alcohol. The IAC, then, made the decision to disband CASA due to continued infractions by the club including breaking the terms of their probation by holding two off campus events that included alcohol, as well as disobeying the requests of the IAC to not plan any future events until a decision was made.

During the council discussion, which lasted for over three hours, representatives of CASA's executive and the Internal Administration Committee had the chance to speak to Students' Council and answer questions regarding the situation. Questions and comments from councillors focused on the process that IAC followed, the nature of the CASA events with the many violations of council procedure and the probation they were on, the equity that all clubs should be given when it comes to violating procedures no matter the popularity or size of a club, as well as the impact that disbanding CASA would have to the Waterloo community.

In the end, the vote of Students' Council was 12 for, 6 against, and 4 abstentions to maintain the disbandment of CASA. This means that no similar club can reform for at least two years. Minutes for this meeting will be released once they are officially approved in the August Council meeting.

At the end of the council meeting Vice President Internal, Nikki Best – who chairs the Internal Administration Committee – thanked councillors for the vigour at which they discussed the situation and for understanding how difficult it is to disband. Regarding the decision, Best commented, "It is always difficult to discipline or disband a club; however, we have to remember that the rules set forth in our procedures are meant to protect the ability of all students to participate in a safe environment. The rules are not arbitrary and they must be enforced equitably and consistently."

Federation of Students Applauds David Johnston: Canada’s next Governor General

Waterloo, ON –

Students at the University of Waterloo are filled with pride and excitement for their President, Canada’s next Governor General, David Johnston.

As the news came in Thursday that Prime Minister Stephen Harper had announced Johnston would succeed Michaëlle Jean as Canada’s Governor General, the university campus quickly lit up with pride. After a decade of dedication to the University community, it is clear that members of the University community have many fond memories of their outgoing President. This is especially true of the students at the University of Waterloo.

Student excitement was clear across social media, as students quickly started to reveal some of their favourite Johnston memories. Stories of Johnston went from impassioned public speeches, friendly conversation and even pouring paint over Johnston’s head (for charity).

The Federation of Students Exec, too, were excited by the news and shared the following stories…

Brad Moggach
President, Federation of Students

As a student leader here at Waterloo, I'm proud to see our President become the next Governor General. President Johnston has been a charismatic leader and demonstrated a lasting commitment to students. At the beginning of my current term as President of the Federation of Students, it has been a pleasure working President Johnston and discussing student support initiatives. Waterloo will certainly miss our President, however we are confident that President Johnston will do an astounding job and represent Waterloo with the highest integrity.

Sarah Cook
Vice President Administration and Finance, Federation of Students

As VP Fundraising and as President of Engineers Without Borders during my undergrad, I met with David several times. He was so proud and excited to see the pictures and hear the stories of the University of Waterloo students who had traveled overseas to Africa and worked in development. David had a strong desire for all Waterloo students to have an international experience, and he often said that EWB, born out of two Waterloo Engineering grads, was one of the prime examples of positive international experiences. He also helped to pull some strings and do some convincing when it came to financial support of the program of various University departments. It is support like David's that makes EWB Waterloo one of the largest and most successful EWB Chapters in Canada,
and the best experience in my life.

Nikki Best
Vice President Internal, Federation of Students

I once had the opportunity to go to his home, a beautiful ranch in the countryside, while working for the university. Mr. Johnston held a luncheon where he thanked the many people at UW with whom he worked with a beautifully catered lunch. He knew the name of everyone and managed to spend a moment with every person to give thanks for their work in the last year. I don't know of anyone who has done this, or will do this in the future with as much charisma and care. He made everyone feel like they belonged, and were an important part of what we do here at Waterloo. Whoever comes after him has extremely large shoes to fill, not just professionally - but charismatically. We're so proud of Mr. Johnston. His appointment only gives us another reason to carry forward our Waterloo Warrior pride.

Nick Soave
Vice President Education, Federation of Students

David Johnston managed to impress upon me the need to always consider every possibility, and not just the one that is right in front of you. President Johnston told me a story of his days back at Harvard about climbing a rope. He believed that his ability to climb the rope would show his worth as a student, but it turned out it actually showed his ability to climb down from the top floor of his residence to escape a fire. His ability to instil this lesson upon me in one story was amazing and something I will always remember.

With the implementation of the harmonized sales tax (HST) starting July 1st in Ontario, it is important to learn about how the HST will affect students across and visiting the province.
News Press Release from the University of Waterloo Federation of Students

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

On June 14th, the University of Waterloo announced a one-year suspension of the varsity football program as a result of an ongoing investigation into the use of banned substances by select members of the team.

"The Federation of Students is strongly opposed to the decision made by the university in this matter," stated Bradley Moggach, President of the Federation of Students. "We have deep concerns for the lack of student consultation in arriving at this decision, as well as the lasting impacts this could have on the football program."

The suspension will affect all team members, regardless of their involvement in banned substance abuse.

"It is disappointing to witness an institute of higher learning using collective punishment to deal with this issue," continued Moggach. "A majority of players on the team were not found to have engaged in the use of banned substances and yet these players will suffer the same result as those who did."

The Federation of Students is calling on the university to step back from the announced suspension of the football program and to engage in consultation with the football players and Federation of Students Executive in order to work towards a mutually agreeable solution to this issue.

The football players will be hosting a press conference to voice their concerns on Thursday, June 17 on the University of Waterloo campus in gymnasium 2 at the Columbia Ice Fields (CIF) at noon. Additionally, this press conference can be heard live at radio.feds.ca.

The Federation of Students exists to serve, empower and represent the 24,000 undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo.

Press Release regarding suspension of Warrior football team

For immediate release to: Federation of Students' Board of Directors and Students' Council; the Imprint; the Waterloo Record; and the University of Waterloo’s Daily Bulletin.

This morning at 11 a.m., the University of Waterloo held a press conference to announce banned substance-testing results of the UW football team while one member faces charges for alleged trafficking of banned substances. The University of Waterloo and the Federation of Students is deeply disappointed in the results of that testing, where a potential 9 of 62 players were engaged in banned substance abuse: one player refused testing, four players admitted use, three cases of adverse analytical findings; and one case is pending additional police investigation.

While the Federation of Students understands the University's decision to suspend the football program for one year, we hold very deep concerns about the welfare of those players who tested negatively and were not engaged in the use of banned substances. The Federation of Students was not involved in this decision and was not consulted by the University during their deliberations but we recognize the University's need for decisive action to ensure that our athletes are committed to fair and ethical play. This decision could very well have significant and lasting impacts on the future of our program. Of specific concern to the Federation of Students is the situation being faced by players in their last year of CIS eligibility and incoming recruits who were under the impression that they would be playing for our school in September. Moving forward, the Federation of Students plans to engage in meaningful and respectful discussions with members of the Warrior
football team, as well as the University administration to ensure that students' concerns are voiced and addressed.

If you are seeking additional comments, please feel free to contact Bradley Moggach, President of the Federation of Students at pres@feds.ca or 519-888-4567 ext. 32478.

Thanks,

Bradley Moggach
President and CEO of the Federation of Students
